How Directories Can Drive Traffic to a Website

There are a lot of ways to drive traffic to your website, and one of the oldest methods is by submitting your website link to Web directories. A Web or link directory is the World Wide Webs directory, and like the yellow pages, it comprises of existing website links in different categories. Its purpose is to link and categorize various websites for surfers to effectively find what they are looking for.

Web directories are different from search engines, because they do not display web page lists that are based on keywords, but rather list a website by its category and its subcategory. The categorization process is normally based on a website as a whole, instead of the content of a page or its keywords, and usually websites are more than often only included in one to two categories. However, Web directories permits website owners to openly submit their website link to be included, and have human editors who evaluate website link submissions for category appropriateness.

RSS directories are also somewhat the same as Web directories, although they contain a compilation of RSS feeds, rather than website links.

Directories in General

Several directories are very much general in range and lists website links throughout a wide scope of languages, regions and categories/subcategories. But there are a handful of niche directories also, which concentrate on a specialist spheres, single languages, or limited regions.

An example of a popular, general, Web directory is the Open Directory Project (ODP) and the Yahoo! Directory. ODP is a major player in Web directories because of its wide-ranging categorization and a vast number of listings. It is also free to use by search engines and other Web directories.

An argument over the quality of these Web databases and directories persists, since search engines utilize ODP’s information without any real incorporation, and several test using clustering. A lot of efforts have been done to build a simple directory development, by using links for a type of link submission website that uses a script, or several of the obtainable PHP programs and portals. Currently, social software methods have initiated new attempts in the categorization process, with the aid of adding tags to the contents of a websites pages.

Why to Use Directories

For arguments sake, sometimes a website may only achieve minimal traffic from a directory compared to a search engine, but it does not necessarily mean that you do not need to submit your website links to these directories.

Targeted traffic to a website is a result of directory searches. A surfer who searches using these directories are normally there for a specific purpose, and that is because they are looking for specific needs. This traffic is more than likely to convert to prospective customers for the products and services that a particular website carries.

Search engines rank website link directories, principally those that contain links for a particular significant interest, like an expert website. Whether this is due to the fact that these directories are managed by humans and not some super computers, it explains why it is still one of the trusted sources for information. Website links listed in these directories for that reason are more credible.

Pitfalls To Avoid When Starting Your Affiliate Marketing Business

Well, you have left that awful job and now are working for yourself. You have jumped on board your new venture which is affiliate marketing. You’re incredibly excited and are working all the hours God sends to make this venture a success. You checking up and monitoring your site and you see that sales are going quite well. Many of the strategies and things that you put in place have helped your affiliate company sell quite a bit. The end of the month finally arrives and you’re waiting for that first large payment. When you check your account you are slightly disappointed. You did make some money but according to your calculations you should have had more. You check your sales figures again and decide to contact the company. They inform you that some of the items sold were returned so those had to be deducted from your commission.

This is disappointing but it does happen. Companies do not pay out commission on returned goods. You need to be aware of this to avoid fall into further pitfalls. No one would expect to be paid a commission on a returned item however; some less than honest affiliate marketing companies can use this to scam some of your profits. You need to make sure you understand their return policy and how it will affect the amount that you are paid.

A return occurs of course when a customer brings an item back. Charge backs can also happen when they dispute an amount on a credit card. Be sure you keep a close watch on which items are being chargeback or returned. See if there are any patterns that are obvious. If you notice that the orders that are charged back are always very high ticket orders then they could be giving you false information. They are doing this to keep you commission down and keep some for themselves. Keep a close eye on returns especially if you think it is happening a little too often.

Charge backs are also indicative of another more serious problem. If you notice that many of these charge backs are happening during an initial trial period, or the money back guarantee time, then there could be further problems. This is a sign that the product or service that you are promoting isn’t up to customer satisfaction. It could be misleading or just poor quality. However, it will effect your commission and your future as an affiliate marketer. If this seems like it is happening a little too often then again, there are problems somewhere in the company. Look to get out and make alternative arrangements.

You also need to be aware of which items are actually commissionable. Make sure you understand which products you will be earning money from to avoid disappointment later. Sometimes the company will offer a selection of products to put on your site, however only certain items may be commissionable. Before agreeing to anything like this checks your terms and conditions carefully.

Finally, you also need to make sure that items that are sold don’t have any other conditions attached. Some will only pay a commission if the customer fills in the payment details immediately. If they select an item and continue to shop, you may not receive any commission on that item. You can also loose commission if the customer clicks on any other links before completing the order. If they order 30 of an item you promoting but click on something else then you have lost out on quite a large amount of commission.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn money. However, before jumping in head first you need to read your terms and conditions carefully. It may be worth having an attorney look them over for you. You need to be aware of the many pitfall people fall into when they go into affiliate marketing. Read and understand your terms to avoid disappointment later.

Buying and Selling Domains: How the Business of Names Can Help You Earn Profits

Who would have thought that money could be made from names? With the advent of the Internet, industry regulars slowly realized the gold mine sitting literally under their fingertips in the form of domain names. These days, buying and selling domains has become a real business, with some highly sought-after names selling for five-digit figures. The domain name ClearDay.com, for example, reportedly sold for $60,000 while Mercury.com made a lot more — $700,000. Think there’s a market out there for your domain name? Here’s how you, too, can make money from a name:

Find domains that you can sell later on.

Generally, people who buy or ‘grab’ domain names don’t really have industry-specific monikers in mind. If you like jewelry, for example, you don’t have to stick to buying domains such as PreciousGems4U.com or SparklingJewelries.net. You can pretty much pick any name that strikes your fancy and then buy it.

However, paying for names that won’t sell later will considerably drill a hole in your pocket if you’re not careful. You could buy dozens of names for a small fee but if you’re not going to use them or can’t sell them later, what’s the point of grabbing them, right?

Do a search on domains that have a potential or those that have shown some sort of following in the past few months. Use the Alexa toolbar to find out which domains or sites are these. Look for names that have registered a minimum of 1,500 to 2,000 hits 30 to 60 days prior to your search. If you’re willing to pay more, look for domains that have registered five-figure hits because that’s an assurance that these domains already have a strong following. You can either sell the domains back to their former owners or have interested parties bid on them. Either way, you’ll profit from your efforts.

Automatically bid on domains.

You can’t always spend hours online searching for domains to buy. Try online grabbing systems that let you automatically bid on domains you’re interested in. Sites such as Pool.com and Snapnames.com are just two of these sites. You’ll pay them a fee if they successfully grab the name on your behalf.

Get your domain name listed.

Before you can sell your domain, you have to be registered. That’s how you can be ‘legally’ recognized. Getting the name registered also bestows upon you the right to claim it and if you so wish, sell it later.

Registering a domain name may be done for a limited period of time, usually as short as 12 months to as long as 10 years. Beyond the chosen period, the registration expires and you can choose to renew it and continue to claim ownership over it. Or, you can choose not to; at which point the domain name will be made available to another buyer. This is where you can sell the domain.

Register a potentially valuable domain.

Many people scour popular shows and events to try to find out which personalities, events or gadgets are developing a following. If you’ve been watching shows such as American Idol, for example, and you check out sites that register domains, you’ll find a few that are familiar. This is because some people will try to register a name of some rising star who will potentially become famous enough to want to build his own website someday. Since his name is already registered, he will want to buy it back and thus earn the investor a nice profit.

If you don’t mind speculating, this may be a good route to take. Just remember, though that it can go either way in which the domain name gets sold or it gets ignored.

Build traffic to your domain.

If you want to take this route and build your domain from scratch, prepare to work. If you have a domain name that you created by yourself or bought, you need to make it valuable to potential investors. Offer high quality content, build a reputation, link up with quality sites, allow your visitors to interact using your website. Once you start appearing on major search engines’ radar and gain a good following, you raise the value of your website and your domain. When the time is ripe, you can then sell that domain for a nice, fat profit.
