I’ve seen and heard about a million different people that have said that they want to make money from blogging. They’ve read the success stories of people that started part-time writing about topics that they loved or topics that they were experts in and very quickly were able to make a living from their blog. Leaving behind their dreary, unfulfilling jobs, they relied solely on the income from their blog to finally be able to live a lifestyle of freedom that many of us dream of.

Believe me when I tell you that no one is any good when they get started, so just go ahead and get over that part of it. You won’t get any better until you start writing and writing won’t get any easier unless you do more of it. Start writing and start profiting.

Make Money Blogging Mistake #2 – Getting too caught up in the “tech” side of blogging. WordPress is a wonderful thing, but it can be a little technical to get things working the way you want them to. Don’t get caught up in that. You need to spend your time creating content, not worrying about installing the right plugin. Get someone else to set that up for you or plug into a system that is set up from the start to be optimized and leave you to create content.

Make Money Blogging Mistake #3 – Believing that you can’t really make good money blogging. A lot of your success is going to be based on your mindset and the preconceived notions that you have about making money. If you believe that you’re always going to have trouble making money with your blog, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Believe that your blog can be a success. See yourself walking into your boss’s office and putting in your two weeks notice. See yourself having time freedom and actually loving what you do.

If I had to go back and start all over again with my online business, I would only choose one method of marketing that business, and that’s blogging. Blogging gives you so many advantages over other methods, more than I can possibly list here. But here’s just a few reasons why you should be blogging and why the sooner you start, the more profitable your online business will be.

You’ve probably heard a lot of internet marketers talking about finding your niche when they’re talking about some of the first steps to building your business.  You’ve probably heard people talk about getting involved with something you have an interest in or love since you’ll be spending a lot of time on the subject as you build your business.

I’m in agreement with that, to some degree.  Yes, I think you should like whatever niche you want to get into when you’re starting your business.  It helps if you have some knowledge about the subject, that way you can provide some value to the community with blogs and articles, or even videos.

But here’s the question that has always bothered me with that theory: What happens if the niche you love is completely worthless?  What happens if no one is spending any money in that niche?  Or even worse, what happens if there are already 10 million people marketing in that niche?  Trust me, there is a point where you can reach complete saturation in a market and there’s no room left for you to make money, at least not a decent amount.

I’m not saying that you can’t make money in your favorite niche, but that may not be your best step when you’re getting started.

I know why you got into this whole “make money on the internet” thing.  You wanted some extra cash, and you wanted that cash quickly.  You want to build a business, but you don’t want to spend the next 18 months living in abject poverty to do it.  You want to make some cash so you can get out of that job that you hate and get out of it in a hurry.

I know you’d love to make a website about underwater basket weaving, and you’re certainly free to do it.  But don’t expect to make any money doing it.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in business, it’s that you really do have to separate emotion from your business decisions.  You can’t fall in love with anything because you never know when you need to cut ties and move on to something else.  That’s another one of the beauties of having an internet marketing business; you can change your entire business in a few hours or add new websites to your growing catalog anytime you like.

So why not do it in niches that are going to make you a ton of cash?  What if you could identify the niches that are going to pay you very well, giving you the freedom (both time and financial) to do the things you really want to do?  You’ve got to take care of those needs first before you can truly start to enjoy your business and do what you want to.  Even if that means sitting around on your butt all day long playing Gears of War while you get hourly deposits in your bank account.  (Isn’t that what all of us want to do?)

The niche you choose should be something that’s going to bring you money and bring it to you quickly.  And if that means you don’t get to start with a niche that you really love right now, that’s ok in my book.  Your business is meant to make your life easier, not harder.  Don’t make the work so hard, get out there and get your money!

Secrets to Get More Blog Traffic

Traffic Voodoo secret #1 – Be consistent.  I’ve seen my own traffic fluctuate quite a bit when I’m active on my site and when I’m not.  If you’re not actively provided new information to your community, they’re not going to come back to your site.  Sorry to tell you that, but it’s true.  There’s a reason that it seems like the leaders online are always creating new info.  They really are adding more value all the time, and that drives traffic.  And it doesn’t necessarily always have to be a new blog post.  You can be active on the social networks as well, which leads me to my next point…

Traffic Voodoo secret #2 – Use social networks to your advantage.  If you haven’t noticed by now, Facebook and Twitter are all the rage.  And more people are starting to use them every day.  Take advantage of these platforms and start letting people know about your site and the content that you have there.  Even if you’ve got older content, I’m sure it’s still pretty good info!  Tell people about it and watch the traffic start to roll in.

Traffic Voodoo secret #3 – Use keywords to grow organic traffic.  If you’re not doing keyword research for the content you’re writing, you’re not writing with a purpose.  Everything you put out should have a keyword focus.  There’s no better way to get more blog traffic than by using the search engines to do the work for you.  Just make sure you’re targeting keywords with you content and you’re developing the right foundation to get more blog traffic.

Traffic Voodoo secret #4 – Use social bookmarking to get backlinks.  It’s all well and good that you’re using keywords in your content, but if there aren’t any links to that content, who cares?  The search engines can’t find that content unless there’s a link to it.  One of the best ways to get backlinks right now is to use social bookmarking.  Now, you can do this all yourself.  Of course, that takes a lot of time and can be a little bit boring.  A better option is to use software to automate that task, freeing you up to create more content.  Bookmarking Demon is great for this and you’ll use it all the time.
