I’ll be the first one to tell you that for most people starting out online the best way for you to start making any type of income is to focus on learning how to make money writing articles.  Writing articles is a great way for anyone to get started making money online, but you’ve got to do it right to maximize your profits.

So, what’s the fastest way to make money writing articles?  Let’s take a quick look at what you’ll need to do, then I’ll tell you where to go next to get started on your journey.  You’re making a great decision to make money writing articles, whether you just want to make some extra cash or if you’re looking to work full-time online from the convenience of home.

Make Money Writing Articles

First of all, if you want to make money writing articles, you’ve got to commit to write something every day.  You can make money with articles, but you’ve got write a lot of them to see results.  The good news is that your articles only need to be between 500-700 words, so you can crank out an article in less than 30 minutes.  You’ll get faster the more you write, so keep at it!

Secondly, you’ve got to know what to write about if you want to make money writing articles.  You may have a subject that you’re really passionate about, but if there’s not any money to be made with that topic, you’re just wasting your time writing about it.  If you don’t know what is worth writing about, keep reading and I’ll tell you where you can find out.

Third, you need to post your articles online on a high traffic, authority website that the search engines love.  You might start a website of your own, but it will take some time before your articles will rank in the search engines and you start getting traffic from them.  In the meantime, you can post your work on an authority website that already has tons of traffic and ranks well.  That way, you’ll start to make money writing articles faster than others might.

Last, you’ve got to make sure your articles give people direction, a “call to action” that will make them buy everything you’ve just told them about.  Just because you wrote an article and someone found it doesn’t mean they will spend any money.  Give them a reason to buy from you by offering them the chance to buy.  Give them a website, an affiliate link, or even one of your own products that they can buy after reading your article.  If your article has solved the problem that they were searching for an answer to, you’ll hear that “cha-ching” and see money hitting your bank account!

I’m going to start this off by saying that article marketing, contrary to what you may have heard from other people, is still a fantastic way to generate leads for your business online.  However, the game has changed quite a bit over the last couple of years and there’s a few things you need to know…

Back in the olden days of the interwebs, like 5 years ago, all you needed to do to get like 473,684 visitors to your website was use some software to crank out a bunch of crappy, nonsensical articles to a bunch of article directories with your chosen keyword linked back to whatever website you were trying to get traffic to.  Boom, you were done.  The articles could be absolute garbage, you just needed backlinks.

There are still a lot of people that use this technique.  You’ll still get backlinks, but you won’t be driving traffic.  In the modern age we live in, you’ve got to be able to write some compelling content to get people to take action after reading your article.  You can’t just throw together some nonsense and expect people to read it.  Because they will read it.

Yes they will.  And they will make a judgement call about what kind of a person you are by the quality of your content.  If you’re turning out garbage, guess what?  But if you’re creating some value for them, you’ll be please with the results.

Now, you still need to submit articles to directories to get the full power of article marketing, your content just has to be up to snuff.  Thank goodness, the quality of the article marketing software (I recommend Article Marketing Robot) that can help you create unique articles has improved tremendously over the last few years.  Using great software, you can write one high quality article, spin it, and be able to submit it to thousands of directories.

So, how do you get your content on the first page of Google using article marketing strategies?  Here’s a few tips:

Article Marketing Strategy #1 – Do your keyword research. Every great article marketer has a great keyword research tool.  In my opinion, Market Samurai is the Bret Hart of keyword research tools.  The best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be.  You need this tool if you’re going to use article marketing to generate leads.  If you’re targeting the wrong keywords, you won’t get any traffic.  Do your research and see where you will get the best return on your time investment.

Article Marketing Strategy #2 – Write quality, relevant content. I can’t stress this enough.  Your content must address the topic you’re writing on.  I know that may sound silly, but there are a ton of people that have an article title about a really low competition keyword and then the article itself is about something completely different, usually something they’re trying to sell.  If you’re writing about how to use twitter for business, then your article better be about using twitter for business, not how to make $67,285 in the next 3 hours by spinning on your head in the middle of Central Park.

Article Marketing Strategy #3 – Link, link, link. You’re writing articles to drive traffic to a specific place.  Make sure you’re linking to that place with the right keywords.  It’s great that you’re writing articles, but if you’re not building links back to your website while you’re doing it, you’re wasting your time.  Always be linking.

Article Marketing Strategy #4 – Submit to major directories first before mass submission. The article directory with the most influence is Ezine Articles.  And they will only accept an article that hasn’t been published anywhere else, and they DO check.  Every article submitted to them is read by a living, breathing person, so just do what they ask.  Once they’ve approved it, you can submit to other places like GoArticles and Articles Base.

Article Marketing Strategy #5 – Mass submission and domination. Now’s the time to fire up that article marketing software and put it to work.  At this point in the process, you’re not really looking for these articles to rank in the search engines, you just want the backlinks to your website that you’re trying to rank.  You still want good quality because you never know when someone will actually read that article.  Quality, quality, quality.

No matter how you slice it, article marketing is a cornerstone technique that needs to be in ever serious online business owner’s marketing strategy. Content really is king, and articles are the king of all content. Articles can form the basis of every other piece of content you create.

But there is a problem with most people’s articles. You probably fall into one of these two categories – either you don’t write enough articles or the articles you do write aren’t any good.

For article marketing to be effective, you’ve got to produce on a regular basis, if not every day. And you’ve got to write good quality content. I’m not saying that you have to be a professional author, just read through many of my articles and you’ll find that is definitely NOT a requirement, but you do need to engage your audience and keep them interested.

Too often articles are written just for the sake of creating backlinks to a site. If that’s your only goal, you’re wasting an awful lot of prime real estate on what could potentially be a lot of websites. And if you’re not writing consistently, there are other people that are taking that precious screen real estate away from you.

So, here’s some tips to help you be more consistent with your articles and produce higher quality content…

Article Marketing Tip #1 – Read More

Yep, I said it. If you want to be a great article writer, you’ve got to read more, and I’m not talking about just reading other people’s articles. Read more of the top blogs online. Read more news articles. And, most importantly, read more books. Specifically, read more fiction books. Find an author or series that you like and start reading. Your creative juices will start flowing and you’ll write better. So, if you don’t like to read, tough. Leaders are readers, so start today. You’ll be glad you did.

Article Marketing Tip #2 – Keep an Idea Notebook

Now, when I say notebook, you have to decide what that notebook is. You can use a notebook, a journal, a legal pad, a text document, whatever works for you. I use an outlining program on my computer, that way I can go back in and add thoughts to different topics. This is just a place for you to write down ideas that come to you so you won’t forget about them. And when it’s time to write, you’ll have 10 – 15 ideas already started that you can choose from. Keep this notebook with you all the time, you never know when you’ll get a great idea.

Article Marketing Tip #3 – Write, Don’t Edit

When you sit down to write an article, do exactly that. Don’t over think it the first time through, just get what’s in your head down on paper or computer. Don’t stop and reread, don’t fix your misspellings, don’t check your grammar. Let the article flow out of you. You can always go back and fix things once you’re done. Sometimes you’ll find that there is nothing to fix. Remember, you’re not trying to become the next Shakespeare, you’re just writing some articles. Get them out and worry about fixing them later.

Article Marketing Tip #4 – Write EVERY DAY

I can’t stress this point enough. You need to write something every day, even if you think it’s terrible. Writing is a process and takes time to improve. You’ll never get any better if you don’t write every day. Again, you don’t have to publish what it is you’re writing, although I’d encourage you to try. But you need to write every day if you want to become a great article writer.

I promise that if you’ll follow the steps above, you’re going to start seeing some dramatic improvements in your articles. Your articles will sound better, get written faster, and produce greater results for your business. No matter what you’re marketing online, article marketing should be one of the key components in your marketing arsenal. Writing articles does a number of things for you, and I’m not just talking about building backlinks to your website. If you’re only using article marketing to generate backlinks, you’re missing about 90% of the good you can get from articles.

Articles help to establish your authority in your market. This can be incredibly helpful, especially if you’re a network marketer. Every article that you write and that is published increases your level of exposure and gains you more credibility online. When people start hearing about you, they can see your work and know that you’re not just another one of those fly-by-night snake oil sales people, trying to squeeze some cash out of every body.

Articles are a great way to build your reputation, but you can also use them in other ways. For instance, you can use the articles you’ve written to create an ebook.

Now, I know what you’re thinking to yourself, “I can’t write a book!”

Well, you don’t have to. An ebook doesn’t have to be some great philosophical look at life and business. It can just be a collection of tips and advice around one subject, preferably a subject that your prospects will be interested in.

Here’s how you can turn your articles into an ebook:

Step #1 – Find a subject to write about

Do your research first. It doesn’t help anyone, including yourself, to write an ebook about a topic that no one cares about. Get in your niche and see what topics people ask a lot of questions about. You don’t have to be an expert when you start your project either. You weren’t an expert on 18th century whaling ships before you wrote that senior paper in high school, were you? Of course not. You did your research and then wrote your paper.

The same goes for your articles and your ebook. Research the topic, then start writing.

Step #2 – Write the articles

An article doesn’t have to be a huge endeavor. 500-700 words is about all it takes for a good, meaty article that will grab your prospect’s attention. You don’t have to go in to huge detail about the article topic, so make sure your topic isn’t too broad. Remember, you’re going to be writing several articles on your chosen topic, so make each one laser-focused on one area.

Step #3 – Compile your articles

This is the easy part. Once you’ve written all your articles (a good number for a short, concise ebook is 5 – 10 articles) just string them together into a book format. You can write a bit of a closing and intro for each article, just to make your ebook easier to read, but that’s entirely up to you. You’ve done most of the work already, take a little time to make your ebook stand out.

Step #4 – Publish and Profit

You’ve put your ebook together, put it in PDF format for easy downloads, and now you’re ready to start giving it to people. Put up a link on your website. Better yet, give the ebook away as a free gift for signing up to your email newsletter.
