Building a Membership Site

For years or even decades the Internet has been a source of unlimited resources for business opportunities. A lot of individuals saw the possibilities of what the Internet could bring and they have effectively harnessed that to build successful business enterprises. Historically the Internet was used for researched purposes of select organizations and universities. Although is has been in existence for almost a decade, it was not until the early 1990′s that the use of internet was made available for the public.

During the late 1990′s the Internet was considered in the dark ages, so to speak. Everything online was expected to be acquired for free. As a result, people were buying computers more and more because essentially they wanted to be online, and the free for all idea worked quite well for a while. However, in early 2000, that same idea started to shift. The Internet world was beginning to bustle with the dot.com mania, online businesses recognized the fact that providing free content wasn’t going to work in the new World Wide Web marketplace anymore.

For many years after the Internet was made available for commercial use, numerous web sites were built to provide products and services to consumers. One of these web sites is the membership site. In concept membership sites are sites that provide information to targeted audiences for free or for a fee.

Through the years membership sites have become so popular that anywhere you can possibly go on the Internet Superhighway, a membership site is in place. A lot of these membership sites offer their information for free, as long as you provide your name and valid email address. In today’s Internet trend, the information provided will most probably be used for future marketing and advertisement activities, so factually speaking it is not for loss that information is given out for free.

Build It and They Will Surely Come

Building a membership site is a very tedious job, but it’s worth it especially if it’s a success. But before you go on building it like a maniac, which a lot of people do, and then they find themselves alone in a dark room asking, what have I done wrong? There are certainly some vital points to consider before you proceed. It is better to write all your concerns to narrow down what you need to do and how to do it right.

1. Membership sites should have a target audience, otherwise if you try to cater to all you will end up with a one big empty and confusing site. Ideally your site should reflect the things that you know best, in that way you can easily answer queries in a credible and professional way. Potential members will immediately see that the person behind the web site knows what he is doing. Faking it is a big NO-NO.

2. Do some research on your target audience, because you have to know what they want and how they want it. Find out as much as you can about their preferences. This will give you ideas on how you can tailor your services for them.

3. Study your market. Find out how other similar membership sites are faring with the same products and services that you plan to offer. Compare prices, incentives for joining and other related issues. You have to be on top of this, anything you do should set you apart from what others are currently doing and make sure that you are noticed for it.

4. Aside from doing online research on membership sites and the products and services they offer, you should also do offline research. You have to determine if what you plan to provide is already available offline. This will effectively answer your question if people will still be willing to pay monthly or yearly recurring fees for it.

5. Remember, building a membership site is not a get rich fast (paid sites) or get noticed fast (free sites) endeavor. It will probably take you 6 to 12 months or more to build up everything from web design, web development, registering a domain name, web hosting, payment system, and of course the content.

A membership site is an extraordinary way to get your expertise out in the World Wide Web, and the potential success is highly probable. Just remember that in any business that you choose whether online or offline, research is the key to determine what strategy to implement to ensure that success will be met. There are no short cuts.
