Have you ever wondered just how long you have to get someone’s attention and get them to read your blog post? I can tell you that you only have a matter of seconds, just simply from the nature of our microwave society. We’re so used to hearing sound bytes, short commercials and flashes of information that are delivered to us very quickly that we’re easily distracted and also easily bored.
And if you’re blogging, your readers are probably being bombarded by about 60 million other things when they’re seeing your blog for the first time. Or even the second time. Just think about how you spend your days at the computer. Do you ever have only one window open on your desktop? How many tabs do you have open in your web browser? As I’m writing this, I have 6 tabs open (which is actually a small number for me) and 6 programs running on my system right now.
And I’m not alone.
You’ve only got a few seconds to grab your reader’s attention and make them read your blog post. And why do you want them to read? Because, if you’re a smart blogger, there’s probably some information somewhere in that blog post that you truly, honestly believe that your readers might enjoy. Maybe it’s a tip on how to do something better or faster. Maybe it’s the coolest new web 2.0 bloggy thingamabobber that you just have to tell everyone about. Or maybe you’re trying to sell something to your readers and you might want them to actually take action at some point and you could get paid a bit!
Seriously, the title of your blog post can make or break your blog traffic, and possibly your online business. Just like the headline of a newspaper or a magazine article, your blog post title is meant to do two things and two things only.
Number 1, get your reader’s attention. Number 2, leave them wanting more.
If your blog post title is not doing these two things, you might as well have left it blank. And you can’t just throw up some sales-pitchy kind of slogan or tag line that is just there to draw attention. You’ve got to think like your readers.
What are they interested in? I’m going to assume that your blog has an overall theme that you have established. If you haven’t done that yet, get focused and choose a direction for your blog. Going in a hundred different directions never did anyone any good. Stick with what your readers like, they’ll thank you for it.
What kind of problems might your readers be having? Can you answer their questions in a blog post? Tell them how to solve the problem in the title of your post. And you don’t always have to make it a big mystery. Let’s take a look at an example situation. Let’s just say your blog post is on the topic of generating more leads to your business opportunity. Which of the following headlines will work better?

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather read the second blog post. The title is specific. I know exactly what I’m going to be reading about. This person added a good amount of people to their contact list in a short period of time, just by using their blog. If I’m marketing online, I’d probably want to know about how this was accomplished.
And your readers will want to know about what ever topic you’re dealing with. Be engaging, leave them wanting a little more. Give them a reason to actually sit down and read through your blog post, not just skim over it.
Start your blog posts with a better title and you’ll begin to see more readers, and subscribers, to your blog. And it you’re telling them where to go in your posts, you’re going to see a nice raise in your bottom line too!
